There are several cruises a day leaving downstream from Chongqing, the earliest leaving at 6:30 AM, and the latest at 11:00 AM. Ships depart from the Chaotian Men Dock (the eastern terminus of bus route #1).Individual passengers may board the ships from 8 PM on the evening prior to departure. Tickets may be purchased at dockside or at the CITS office(Renmin Hotel, room 138). Passage may be booked to Wuhan (arriving about 3 PM on the third day), to stops en route (Zhongxian, Wanxian,Fengjie, Wushan, Yichang, Shashi, and Yueyang on most ships), or through to Shanghai (change boats at Wuhan; minimum five days' sail). The trip from Chongqing to Wuhan, going downstream, takes 54 hours, approximately 30 of which are spent going through the gorges. Going upstream from Wuhan takes 76 to 98 hours, depending on whether the boat is local or express. Fewer boats run upstream than down. The Jianghan steamers do not make any special stops for tourists, although they do stop for the night, usually in Wanxian (coming downstream) and in Yichang and Wanxian (coming up). Foreigners may book passage through the Wuhanbranch.
