It is important because it is one of the cleanest cities in China, well-run and very pleasant. Traffic jams are rare, city buses are modern and efficient, and bicycles are few. Even the few motorcylists wear helmets! Fines are imposed for littering. Officially, no spitting is allowed, and only natural gas is used for fuel. The air is clean.

Xiamen is the ancestral home of millions of Overseas Chinese now living in other parts of Asia, a port city, and an important trading city. Over 2000 joint-venture companies operate here but no heavy industries or factories are allowed downtown. It is charming (like Hong Kong used to be), with some old architecture, and lots of parks.
