It is famous for its vertical limestone mountains rising above flat tree-lined streets, rice and water chestnut fields, and the meandering Li and Taohua (Peach Blossom) Rivers. It is also known for its caves. The Li River cruise is the main reason tourists flock here. Guilin developed with the opening of the Ling Canal over 2200 years ago. It was the provincial capital until 1014 A.D., and a command post for the Northern Expedition in 1928. The Japanese war destroyed much of the city during which the Seven Star Cave alone sheltered 5,000 refugees from bombs.
