The, urban population is about six million, the total about 30.2 million. Chongqing is over 3,000 years old. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Ba in the 12th century B.C. During the Song, it was named Chongqing, which means double celebration. During the Qing, a 10-meter-high, seven-km wall was built around the city. In the 19th century, Chongqing was one of the treaty ports open to foreigners, and foreign missionaries and teachers worked here before 1949. Innumerable books have been written in English about this area. In the late 1930s, during the Sino-Japanese War, the Nationalist government moved its capital here, and Han Suyin's book Destination Chungking reflects that period. Unfortunately, Japanese bombs destroyed much of the city, and few ancient relics survived the war. Zhou Enlai (Chou En-lai) lived here as he tried to work with the Nationalists against the Japanese. American missions (Stilwell, Hurley, Marshall and Wedmeyer) attempted to get the Nationalists to work with the Communists. Read Theodore H.
