Recommended English-language Publication
This page is Recommended English-language Publication for China Information.
You’ll find English-language newspapers in most major cities. The local English-language newspapers, such as the China Daily (nationwide distribution) and the Shanghai Star, have a decided government tone to them, and their international news tends to be very bland and self-serving. Most five-star hotels in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou have copies of the International Herald-Tribune, The Asian Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. International magazines, such as Time, Newsweek, The Economist, and The Far Eastern Economic Review also are available in these hotels.
Many of the major hotels will have local English-language news programs as well as CNN and/or STAR-TV. Hotels in Guangzhou and Shenzhen also have access to English-language broadcasts originating in nearby Hong Kong.
As might be expected, availability of foreign publications and television programs depends on the prevailing political winds blowing out of Beijing. Censorship, which can be both subtle and quite obvious, is still well and alive in China, and it occasionally affects such publications and broadcasts.
