Located in central Sichuan province of which it is the capital, Chengdu has a history of over 2,000 years. In the fourth century B.C., the King of Shu moved his capital here and named it Chengdu (Becoming a Capital). In the Han, after brocade weaving became successfully established, it was called the Brocade City. During the Three Kingdoms, it was the capital of Shu. Many American, Canadian, and British missionaries and teachers lived here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Chengdu can be reached in 19 hours by the fastest train from Kunming through 250 km of tunnels, less than 30 hours from Beijing, and 16 hours from Xi’an. Express buses from Chongqing are faster than train. From there, it is a 3.5-4 hour, 340 km trip on a super highway for about Y98. For buses to Leshan, use the Xinnanmen Bus Station; to Chongqing and Dazu (four hours), use the Wuguiqiao Bus Station; to Jiuzhaigou and Wolong, use the Ximeng bus station.
